Ash Wednesday and Lenten Fasting … During Lent, Catholics are encouraged to engage in fasting and almsgiving & to increase their faithfulness to prayer. In this season two days stand out as particularly important days of fasting & abstinence: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On both of these days, it is the practice of the Church that Catholics who are 14& older abstain from meat &Catholics 18 – 59 fast by eating only one full meal during the day (you may also take two smaller meals which, if eaten together, would still be smaller than a normal meal). Obviously certain medical conditions may mean you cannot keep this fast but if at all possible, this practice is highly encouraged in honour of Our Lord’s passion & death to help us grow in self-restraint and fortitude against temptation.
