What should our disposition be when the priest holds up the host at Mass? … Bow our heads? Look at it? I’m never sure. After the priest prays the words of consecration at Mass (“Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my Body, which will be given up for you”) he holds up, or elevates, the Host. As far as physical disposition goes, either bowing your head or looking at it would be fine, whichever you choose is up to you. It might even change from Mass to Mass. Your interior disposition – the disposition of your mind and heart – is properly one of thanksgiving, adoration, and awe since what you are seeing is no longer bread, not a mere symbol but Christ Himself. Of course, in our weakness it happens that we might believe this with our heads but not feel it in our hearts. There could be many reasons for this. On the negative side it could be distractions from outside, lack of focus, lack of preparation before Mass, personal sin, and so on. On the positive side it could be that God is teaching you to rely of your faith rather on than your emotions in your relationship with him. In any case, we respond to God with a disposition of faith.

This week’s question: If you go to communion in the morning, can you receive communion at night also? … This is such a common question that the church has spoken formally about it in Canon Law. Canon 917 reads, “A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of can. 921, §2.” Canon 921.2 simply encourages a person in danger of death to receive Holy Communion even if they have already received Communion that same day. This question often arises when a person is at a wedding or a funeral and then attends the Saturday Mass of anticipation on the same day.

What is the policy on bringing communion to the sick who can’t make Mass? Are the sick to fast 1 hour before receiving communion? … we had a number of questions touching on the Eucharist so I will answer them over the next few weeks leading up to the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. As a background on today’s topic, it’s been the practice of the Church of many years now to fast 1 hour before receiving communion (to not eat or drink anything except water). To be clear, it does not mean 1 hour before the beginning of Mass but 1 hour before the actual reception of Holy Communion so if Holy Communion is offered 30 minutes after Mass begins then you would only fast 30 minutes before the beginning of Mass (I’m assuming here no one is bringing popcorn to the Mass, the homilies aren’t that entertaining). When it comes to bringing Holy Communion to the sick, we do not expect the sick person to fast (they need proper nutrition). In fact, those who might be presently caring for the sick person are also not expected to fast. Taking the Eucharist away from the Church does require the permission of the pastor who is charged to care for the Eucharist and must be done with every care since it is the very Body and Blood of Jesus. We have a team of people who regularly take Holy Communion to the hospital and to the homes of people who cannot make it to Mass. If you want to join this team or know of any parishioner who might need its service, please contact the parish office.

Free Estate Planning Workshop … join us for a presentation on a Catholic’s Guide to Will Preparation, Health Care Directives, Powers of Attorneys, Funeral and Burial Instructions, and more. This 60-90 minute presentation provides valuable advice and resources for parishioners including tax savings tips, tips on stewardship gifting, education on wills and other estate planning documents. Wednesday, May 20th, from 7:00 – 8:30pm at St. Paul’s Parish Centre. Host, Jeff Cormier, Parishioner & Lawyer.

Our stormy winter is over but it was a costly one … with all the weekend storms we’ve had this year, we are about $20,000 behind where we should be. While we did have a slight increase in donations last year it won’t be enough to cover these losses. We’ll do the best we can to manage the shortfall but if you can at all help out with extra donations in the coming weeks, it would go a long way to ensuring we don’t have a deficit at the end of the year. While we’re on the topic of finances, we had a great annual financial meeting. Chad Mann & Peter Brown gave very well prepared & insightful presentations to the 20-30 people who came out. It would be great to see more people next year.

Prayers for the sick & suffering … Richard & Lisa Arsenault, Walter DesRoches, Eunice Savidant, Marie McKenna, Darlene Savory, Margaret Cole, Doris Gerrard, Mary Bell, Norma Lewis, Patricia Tang, Sylvain Richard, Betty Cormier, John DeCoste, Richard Arsenault, André Cormier, Joseph & Stella Albert, Shirley Dickinson, Tyler Field, Steven Sauvé, S. Arsenault, Erma Huestis, Adam Bourque, Sheila Dunphy … that Jesus may bring them healing in body and spirit.

This Week’s Question from the Question Box … Why is Jesus sometimes called the Son of Man? Isn’t he God’s son? This is a difficult question to answer fully in the bulletin but I’ll give a very basic answer to the question. Jesus is both the Son of God and the Son of Man. He is one person and that one person is both truly human and truly divine. The two titles highlight different aspects of the one person of Jesus Christ. This interpretation dates back very early in the Church’s history. Irenaeus, for example, wrote: “For this is why the Word became man, and the Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God” (Adversus Haereses, 3, 9, 1 which dates between 175-185 AD). Interestingly, the only person in the New Testament to describe Jesus with the title “the Son of Man” is Jesus himself (with one exception: Stephen in Acts 7:56 describes seeing a vision of “the Son of Man” standing at the right hand of God). In some English translations you’ll find “the Son of Man” twice in the Book of Revelation but the definite article isn’t found in the Greek text of Revelation.
