Which action by Christ saves us? … Is it the sacrifice of his body on the cross or the resurrection? A better way to think of the saving act of Christ is to think of it in terms of the “Paschal Mystery.” “The Paschal Mystery has two aspects: by his death, Christ liberates us from sin; by his Resurrection, he opens for us the way to a new life” (CCC 654). Both the sacrifice of his body on the cross and the resurrection are a part of the same mystery that saves us.

What is limbo (continued)? … Last time I spoke of the “Limbo of the Patriarchs” but I find most people, when they ask about limbo, are asking about the “Limbo of Infants.” We start with the general principle: according to the revelation, baptism is necessary for salvation. Sadly, it sometimes happens that infants die before they are baptized. While they were born in a state of Original Sin, it’s also true they haven’t committed any personal sins, so it seems more than a bit extreme to say they will end up in hell. However, if baptism is necessary for heaven as revelation says, then it seems they cannot enter heaven either. So what happens? The “Limbo of Infants” is a solution that some theologians put forward: a place without the suffering expected in hell but without the beatific vision promised in heaven either; a place of natural happiness. But what is the status of the “Limbo of Infants” today? In 2007 the International Theological Commission released the results of a study done at the request of the Pope on the “Limbo of Infants” and their study ended with a virtual shrug of the shoulders. While pointing out that the “Limbo of Infants” has been taught in the past, they also pointed out the Catechism of the Catholic Church does not mention it at all and the funeral liturgy for infants who die without baptism entrusts them to God’s mercy, making no mention of limbo. Revelation simply does not give a clear answer to the question so the best we can do is trust in God’s mercy. It’s worth pointing out that the Catechism does say, “God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism, but he himself is not bound by his sacraments” (CCC 1257). God normally works salvation through baptism but that doesn’t mean he is limited to that means alone. It’s just that he hasn’t told us explicitly about any other means. And so, we entrust the unbaptized to God.
