Pope Francis’ Encyclical on the Environment … In the Judaeo-Christian tradition, the word “creation” has a broader meaning than “nature”, for it has to do with God’s loving plan in which every creature has its own value and significance. Nature is usually seen as a system which can be studied, understood and controlled, whereas creation can only be understood as a gift from the outstretched hand of the Father of all, and as a reality illuminated by the love which calls us together into universal communion. We may need to ask each parent to teach one lesson through the year and help you realize that teaching is not difficult. You teach your children something new every day, why not their faith?

Book of Gospels … in the Eucharist, the proclamation of the Gospel is situated in the “Liturgy of the Word”. Several ritual words and actions help us recognize the reading of the Gospel as the high point of this part of the Mass. Our hearing of the Good News is preceded by a sung acclamation and a procession. The Book of Gospels may be incensed. We stand to listen, and prepare ourselves to hear with the ears of our hearts by the triple tracing on our persons of the sign of the cross, as we acclaim, “Glory to you, Lord!” At the conclusion of the proclamation, the Book of Gospels is reverenced with a kiss by the deacon or priest who, from its pages, has announced the Good News.

The Church does not presume to settle scientific questions or to replace politics. But I am concerned to encourage an honest and open debate so that particular interests or ideologies will not prejudice the common good.

I will need to give Charlene numbers, so please let me know by email that you will be attending.

New Statues … you may have noticed we have a couple of new statues in the church. St. Joseph came from the Rollo Bay church after it closed and was repainted. Besides being the foster-father of Jesus, St. Joseph is also the patron Saint of Canada. Next to him we have two saints who lived in Canada: St. Andre and St. Kateri (to come). Brother Andre (taken from Saint Joseph’s Oratory website): “At first assigned to be doorkeeper at Collège Notre-Dame, he was then named caretaker at that house of prayer which he shepherded into existence on Mount Royal. The religious brother welcomed thousands of distressed people or those who were looking for a ray of hope. He listened to them and recommended that they pray to Saint Joseph in whom he had full confidence. Any number of miraculous healings took place there and hearts turned toward God. Today, Saint Brother André continues to be an inspiration and a friend for women and men of any religious practice.” Saint Kateri (info CCCB website): Born in present day New York state, Saint Kateri fled to Quebec when, after her baptism, she met much hostility and threats because of her faith. “In Kahnawake, Kateri was known for her faith and holiness. She taught prayers to children, cared for the elderly and the sick, and would often attend mass at sunrise and sunset.” She has the distinction of being “the first native North American to be raised to the glory of the altars.” Her burial site is located at Saint Francis Xavier Mission in Kahnawake (Quebec). We thank the family who donated all three statues to the parish.

Quotes from Pope Francis’ Encyclical “Laudato Si” Creatures are not just resources … It is not enough to think of different species merely as potential “resources” to be exploited, while overlooking the fact that they have value. Each year sees the disappearance of thousands of plant/animal species which we will never know, which our children will never see, because they have been lost forever. The great majority become extinct for reasons related to human activity. Because of us, thousands of species will no longer give glory to God by their very existence, nor convey their message to us. We have no such right. (33)

Finance Committee Election … Currently our Finance Committee consists of members elected by the pastor in consultation with the existing committee. This is to ensure we have people with the experience and expertise we need for our deliberations. We will continue to elect some of the committee’s membership in this manner, however, this year we will also elect 2 members to the Finance Committee through a general parish election. Quotes from Pope Francis’ Encyclical “Laudato Si” Pope Francis on the Environment … Drinking water is a human right. One particularly serious problem is the quality of water available to the poor. Even as the quality of available water is constantly diminishing, in some places there is a growing tendency, despite its scarcity, to privatize this resource, turning it into a commodity subject to the laws of the market. Yet access to safe drinkable water is a basic/ universal human right, since it is essential to human survival and, as such, is a condition for the exercise of other human rights. Our world has a grave social debt towards the poor who lack access to drinking water, because they are denied the right to a life consistent with their inalienable dignity.

We will be accepting nominations for the election until October 18th at noon. These nominations can be passed into the parish office or placed in an envelope marked “Finance Committee Nomination” and dropped into the collection basket at Mass or slide under the Main Office door. If we have more than two nominations, the names will be published in the bulletin on the weekend of Oct 24-25th and the voting will take place following each Mass on the weekend of Oct 31 – Nov 1. For nominations, clearly indicate: 1) name and contact info of the person being nominated, 2) signatures of three parishioners not related to the nominee. Please note that the Committee currently meets on the last Thursday of the month when considering this ministry.

United in Love … World Mission Sunday, set aside by Pope Pius X1 in l926, is the “feast of catholicity and universal solidarity” and takes place on October 18th. Let us put together our hope and let us take the opportunity, during this month of missions, to show solidarity with our poorest brothers and sisters … let us help , let us go to the outskirts, to nearly impossible places, in order to change the world.
