Pope Francis’ … “Market forces alone won’t protect the environment.” Once more, we need to reject a magical conception of the market, which would suggest that problems can be solved simply by an increase in the profits of companies or individuals. Is it realistic to hope that those who are obsessed with maximizing profits will stop to reflect on the environmental damage which they will leave behind for future generations? Where profits alone count, there can be no thinking about the rhythms of nature, its phases of decay and regeneration, or the complexity of eco- systems which may be gravely upset by human intervention.

Pope Francis’ … “The richest countries should shoulder the main burden of caring for the environment.” Some strategies for lowering pollutant gas emissions call for the internationalization of environmental costs, which would risk imposing on countries with fewer resources, burden- some commitments to reducing emissions comparable to those of the more industrialized countries. Imposing such measures penalizes those countries most in need of development.

You may have heard that Pope Francis opened the Holy Doors in Rome for the Year of Mercy … but what’s this about?
During the Year of Mercy, a plenary indulgence will be granted to those who go on pilgrimage to a church or shrine and walk through the Holy Doors opened there for the Jubilee (and fulfill the general conditions for gaining an indulgence). You don’t have to go all the way to Rome to participate in this plenary indulgence though, the Pope asked that every diocese open a Holy Door and Bishop Grecco has opened one, St. Dunstan’s Basilica,Ch’Town.
What is an indulgence? In technical language, an indulgence is a remission of temporal punishment due to sin. Consider this analogy: you’re 13 years old and you hit a baseball through your house’s window. You might go and say you’re sorry and your parents might then forgive you for the careless act, even though they will ground you as punishment. But then you decide to do extra help around the house and in recognition of this, your parents decide that instead of being grounded for two weeks they reduce it to one. An indulgence is sort of like this special relief your parents gave you. It is a special grace of God given through the ministry of the church to relieve the temporal punishment due to sin.
What are the “general conditions” to gain an indulgence? The faithful must be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. For a plenary indulgence it is necessary to 1) have received the sacraments of reconciliation and Holy Communion within about 20 days of completing the indulgenced work, 2) pray for the Pope’s intentions, 3) have an interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin.
Why “Holy Doors”? Doors “represent passage: sin to redemption, life to death, disbelief to faith, and so on. Jesus describes himself as The Door. People have to enter through Christ to get to the Father. The door is the path to salvation” (Thomas L. McDonald). The act of walking through the doors is meant to be a physical representation of a spiritual reality taking place in your life with Christ. Consider making a pilgrimage to the basilica and walk through these doors during this Year of Mercy.
