Message of Pope Francis for Lent 2016 …
God’s mercy transforms human hearts. It enables us to become merciful and to devote ourselves to the works of mercy. In the corporal works of mercy we touch the flesh of Christ in our brothers and sisters who need to be fed, clothed, visited; in the spiritual works of mercy – counsel, forgiveness, prayer – we touch more directly our own sinfulness. For by touching the flesh of the crucified Jesus in the suffering of others, sinners can receive the gift of realizing that we too are poor and in need. The season of Lent is a favorable time to overcome our existential alienation by listening to God’s word and by practicing the works of mercy. We ask this through the maternal intercession of Virgin Mary who encountered the greatness of God’s mercy. www.dioceseofcharlottetown.com

Physician-assisted Suicide and Euthanasia: Please be assured that the Canadian Bishops view this issue with the utmost gravity and concern. The President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (Most Reverend Douglas Crosby, Diocese of Hamilton) and Cardinal Thomas Collins, Archdiocese of Toronto have written to both the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of Canada, and the Minister of Health regarding this issue. Similarly
they have requested to appear before the Special Joint Committee on Physician-Assisted Dying, a body charged with developing appropriate legislation for the country to regulate doctor assisted suicide. It is also important to recall that the Church’s long-standing position has been unequivocal in supporting and defending life from conception to natural death. If you wish to have your voice heard you may wish to sign the petition re assisted suicide and euthanasia www.euthanasiadeclaration.ca/signatories/
