Religious Education News … catechism registration will be this Monday, Aug. 29th for Grades 2 – 8 and Tuesday, August 30th for Grade 1only.  Both nights begin at 6:30pm in the Centre boardroom.  Registration fee remains at $20 per child with maximum of $50 for three or more children.  The first Sunday for catechism is September 18th .  Please ensure your child(ren) are registered before the start date.  Teachers for grades 4, 5, 6, 7 are still needed.  We will be looking at this situation to do what we can to have teachers for each grade before the beginning of catechism.

Jubilee for Catechists “Announcing the Mercy of God” … on Sunday, Sept. 25th, Pope Francis will celebrate ,with catechists around the world, the Jubilee for Catechists.  The National  Office for Evangelization and Catechesis has prepared an online resource “The Jubilee for Catechists:  Announcing the Mercy of God”, for use in parishes.  The materials can be accessed on the website … http://www.cccb.ca/site/eng/office-for-evangelization-and-catechesis/4482-jubilee-for-catechists    Resources may be used throughout the year by catechism coordinators, parish pastoral workers, clergy, and parents to emphasize the special role of the catechist.  Parishes may wish to use the liturgical suggestions for a special blessing of catechists either on Sept. 25th or another time.  As members of the Diocese of Ch’Town and the universal Church, let us join together in prayer/thanksgiving as we prepare to celebrate catechists – past, present and future.

Hospice Volunteer Training … the East and West Prince Chapters of Hospice PEI will be offering training sessions from Sept. 14 to Oct. 12,  at Prince County Hospital, Summerside. The sessions will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 pm., for a total of nine sessions beginning on a Wednesday.  The training will address such topics as: introduction to hospice palliative care; the role of the volunteer; effective communication skills; family and family dynamics; grief and bereavement; emotional/psychological/spiritual/physical issues and support; pain and symptom management; caring for people at home; and, selfcare. Anyone from across the Island is invited to take part in the training. If you are interested in becoming a Hospice volunteer, you can contact the East Prince office at 902-438-4231 or the West Prince office at 902-859-2870 to register or for further information.

Celebrating the Holy Year of Mercy … St. Dunstan’s Basilica, Sunday, Sept. 4th, 2:30pm.  Mass in Syro-Malabar Rite for the Syro-Malabar Community in PEI.  This Rite is one among the 22 Rites in the Catholic Church.  Mass will be celebrated in their Mother tongue – “Malayalam”

Society of St. Vincent de Paul … the need for our services remains high – our volunteers have given out close to 500 bags of groceries since the first of June.  We thank you for your help in the past and sincerely urge you to continue – you are making a difference!  Alone we can do so little but together we can do so much!  Suggested food items … Cheese Whiz, canned meats and fish, canned milk & fruit.

 Parish House …  as you may have seen/heard, we have put the rectory (parish house) up for sale. Our house on Granville St. was bought at a time when there was talk of having all the priests in the area living together in S’side. Unfortunately, plans change and as you know, this plan never happened. The house on Granville is now too large & costly for our needs so we will be moving to a smaller house closer to the church, which will allow us to save money in the long term.

Lucia’s Retirement … you read that right.  After many years as our office manager, Lucia will be retiring this November. When November gets closer, we will announce a date for a retirement gathering in her honour. We are starting the hunt for a new employee now and a job description will be available on our website later this week.

Giving to the Church … if you ever noticed that the person next to you at Mass didn’t put anything in the collection, they might be giving through an automatic withdrawal from their bank account.  It saves you the hassle of trying to remember the envelope before rushing out the door and you know your parish will still benefit from your generosity when you are travelling.  Contact the parish office if you want more details or to sign up!

 Presentation on Scottish Ancestry …  Saturday, August 20th, 2 – 4pm, Souris Silver Threads Club, the PEI Scottish Settlers Historical Society is hosting a presentation on the families who fled from Scotland and landed on St. John’s Island (PEI) in 1772. The event will highlight the settlers of Lot 47 (East Point), drawing upon stories, folklore, and history to tell the story of our Scottish ancestors.

St. Paul’s Cemetery Sunday Mass  … at the cemetery (weather permitting) on Sunday, August 14th, 11:00am.  Bring your own chair.  Should we have inclement weather, the Mass will be in the Church, same time.  We certainly wish to acknowledge the continued wonderful work of Leonard Walsh & Leonard Gallant, caretakers for the cemetery.

Priest Benevolent Fund … as we move into the 2nd half of the Drive, we thank all who have contributed and continue to do so.  The demand on the Fund has increased due to the increased number of aging priests.  The Diocese could never give the care needed to our retired priests if it was not for you.  Your contribution also continues to help your parish as 25% of monies contributed go back to your parish.  No doubt your Pastor & Property/Finance Com. are equally grateful to you.  Should anyone have questions, please contact the Benevolent Fund office 902-393-3441.
