What is the policy on bringing communion to the sick who can’t make Mass? Are the sick to fast 1 hour before receiving communion? … we had a number of questions touching on the Eucharist so I will answer them over the next few weeks leading up to the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. As a background on today’s topic, it’s been the practice of the Church of many years now to fast 1 hour before receiving communion (to not eat or drink anything except water). To be clear, it does not mean 1 hour before the beginning of Mass but 1 hour before the actual reception of Holy Communion so if Holy Communion is offered 30 minutes after Mass begins then you would only fast 30 minutes before the beginning of Mass (I’m assuming here no one is bringing popcorn to the Mass, the homilies aren’t that entertaining). When it comes to bringing Holy Communion to the sick, we do not expect the sick person to fast (they need proper nutrition). In fact, those who might be presently caring for the sick person are also not expected to fast. Taking the Eucharist away from the Church does require the permission of the pastor who is charged to care for the Eucharist and must be done with every care since it is the very Body and Blood of Jesus. We have a team of people who regularly take Holy Communion to the hospital and to the homes of people who cannot make it to Mass. If you want to join this team or know of any parishioner who might need its service, please contact the parish office.

Our stormy winter is over but it was a costly one … with all the weekend storms we’ve had this year, we are about $20,000 behind where we should be. While we did have a slight increase in donations last year it won’t be enough to cover these losses. We’ll do the best we can to manage the shortfall but if you can at all help out with extra donations in the coming weeks, it would go a long way to ensuring we don’t have a deficit at the end of the year. While we’re on the topic of finances, we had a great annual financial meeting. Chad Mann & Peter Brown gave very well prepared & insightful presentations to the 20-30 people who came out. It would be great to see more people next year.
