Pope Francis’ Encyclical on the Environment … “No creature is superfluous, all of creation speaks of God’s love.” Our insistence that each human being is an image of God should not make us overlook the fact that each creature has its own purpose. None is superfluous. The entire material universe speaks of God’s love, his boundless affection for us. Soil, water, mountains: everything is, as it were, a caress of God. (84)

Book of Gospels … while the Book of Gospels leads us into our celebration of the Eucharist, it is not carried out at the end. It remains at the ambo or at a place of respect as we leave the church. The absence of the Book of Gospels reminds us that it is not a book that carries the Gospel from the church into the week ahead. Together, we are the means through whom the Good News of Jesus Christ is borne into the world. How wonderful for us to be reminded of that when we are sent forth with the commission, “Go, and proclaim the Gospel of the Lord”, and we accept the mandate with our response, “Thanks be to God!”
